EV charger connectors

EV charger connectors vary by region and charging speed (AC vs. DC), with major types including Type 1 (J1772) for North American AC, Type 2 (Mennekes) for European AC, CCS (Combined Charging System) for North American (CCS1) and European (CCS2) DC fast charging, CHAdeMO (Japanese DC), and NACS (Tesla), which combines AC/DC and is becoming a North American standard. GB/T is the standard in China for both AC and DC charging.

AC Charging (Slower)
  • Type 1 (J1772): Single-phase, common in older North American and Japanese EVs.
  • Type 2 (Mennekes): European standard, 7-pin, supports three-phase AC for faster charging.
  • GB/T AC: China’s standard for AC, similar to Type 2 but with reversed pins.
DC Fast Charging (Rapid)
  • CCS Combo 1 (CCS1): North American standard, adds two large DC pins below the Type 1 connector.
  • CCS Combo 2 (CCS2): European standard, adds two large DC pins below the Type 2 connector.
  • CHAdeMO: Japanese standard, used by early Leafs and others, being phased out in some markets.
  • NACS (Tesla): Tesla’s connector, now adopted by many automakers for North America, handles both AC & DC.
  • GB/T DC: China’s DC standard, with advanced versions like ChaoJi emerging.
